APUNTES SOBRE UNA LÍNEA DE FUEGO
- HUGO LUGO
STATEMENT
A (second)
Note over a line of fire.
We suggest reading quickly and without blinking.
Lying down, calm, a landscape almost peeks out. A rainbow is outlined. A meteorite bursts into color to manifest the possibility of tragedy; A tragedy that produces calm, peace and, curiously, hope. A tragedy that from a subtle and elegant humor has accompanied Lugo's work for a long time. Memories of career scars begin to emerge. We seldom think about the demands of ideas; small dictators that torment us and force us to leave the white of the sheet to fall on the edges of the paper.
Our role.
Sketches, studies, lines, essays, and notes appear. Images that refuse to finish. Narratives that stay true to possibility. Images sprout in the forest of memories. Another image appears in different circumstances and a third one that confirms how violent the simple can become.
Even the word is sharp:
simple.
How much does an image weigh? Nice question. Space splits in two and we embrace nothingness. Insecure, fragile architectures and treacherous spaces are being formed that do not respect their place in the shadows. One thing you must admit to Hugo: it is never easy to get in the middle of the frame. Hence theories, treatises and triptychs arise. Aesthetic objects. Shoots and continuations of the image that end up inhabiting the geographies of sculpture. Again: the weight of the image.
Drawing has always been a dizzying act because we never know what will appear on the other side of the line. Unexpected endings. Sets. Acts and constructions - Finite images for eyes that keep looking - Theories, points that separate, fall, overwhelm, and inhabit.
Colors.
What a beautiful and complex word.
From the magic that cave paintings possessed to the rigor of the storyboard,
How far can we go for a painting?
Deploying his ability to go through different techniques and supports, this exhibition results in a treatise on fragility. A form of correspondence between drawings, paintings, objects, engravings, and sculptures; recent work and concerns that from very early in Lugo's career have allowed him to develop a refined visual production system that, at the same time, values and mistrusts the symbolic, social, philosophical, and historiographic meaning of the images that surround us.
Paintings that confuse the eye.
Aesthetic experiences that help us look again.
Looking is a political gesture covered by the sensitive.
They say that with the first blink of the human being, dusk was formed.
