PARQUE LEZAMA

STATEMENT

In this exhibition titled Parque Lezama, Mas Allá Del Sendero Francisco Larios presents two series Coral Island and Khloris, apparently distant from each other as
technique, composition, format and discourse, when in the background they intercede, since both explore the ravages of human behavior determined by instinct.
Coral Island by Larios is a series that revisits The Coral Island by R.M. Ballantyne and The Lord of the Flies by William Golding. There are 365 characters in their youth or in
late childhood, tempered by an expression and outfit that references The Lord of the Flies. It is a call for attention to reflect once again on how the veneer of civilization is erased in certain situations. It highlights the defeated effort that humanity has had to mitigate and appease the inherent violence of man, when it is defeated by itself again and again throughout history, always vindicated by the survival instinct.
Presenting this body of work in 2023, after a pandemic, is appropriate. This period of contingency once again exemplified the undeniability of the human condition. A global circumstance became an accepted anomaly, in which the spheres of power once again subdued the masses by exercising power through knowledge.
Khloris takes the leap to the extreme, to the place where human beings have the space and time for contemplation and enjoyment. It is the passage through the garden of paradise that inspires, that appeals for plenitude. It is where we glimpse humanity that knows that beyond the instinct of destruction, the development of civilization, it does not lack the possibility of enjoyment. Larios alludes to the parks and gardens to which Borges so liked to walk. Those that have accompanied man throughout the centuries, that have become sacred places, with an untimely function of reflection, reunion and introspection. The distant lights, the blurred silhouettes, the unrecognizable sounds are the invitation to the discovery of something that is deep down: the possibility of enjoying the experience of life.
If so, then it would be worth retracing the journey of the human condition through the work of Larios, to remain with a hint of hope, in the sublime of color, of the imagination in order to contain it.
